Bruno De Feraudy, Senior Vice President at Michelin, recently shared an exciting insight into the power of their electric car tyres. During an interview at Michelin’s research and development base in Clermont Ferrand, France, De Feraudy revealed that by utilizing specific EV tyres, drivers can expect an impressive boost of 30 to 50 kilometres in battery range. This significant improvement highlights the positive impact that Michelin’s innovative tyre technology can have on enhancing the performance and efficiency of electric vehicles.

While the company aims to further decrease rolling resistance, there is a limit to how much it can be reduced.

“Total elimination of resistance is not feasible, as it would compromise grip and control, resulting in a driving experience akin to navigating on ice. Striking the right balance between reduced resistance and maintaining optimal grip remains a key challenge in tire development.”

Michelin’s engineers are constantly working on innovative solutions for the EV industry, according to De Feraudy. He mentioned that sometimes they come up with groundbreaking solutions that seem unbelievable. However, there is a need to ensure practicality and feasibility in implementing these ideas, requiring a balance between pushing the boundaries of innovation and maintaining real-world applicability.

He highlighted that with electric vehicles and their heavy battery weight ranging from 300 to 700 kilograms, Michelin’s E Premacy tyres can now support an additional 300 kilos on the car. This represents a significant improvement and showcases a paradigm shift in the industry, achieved simply by changing the tyre’s construction.

While De Feraudy acknowledges the progress made by Michelin, he emphasizes that they are far from reaching the ultimate goal when it comes to EV tyres.
